- They were but boys

They joined the “Royal Berks”, now let me see..
Ah yes, ‘twas late Autumn ’34;
Spotty faced and down upon their chins,
Sparkling eyes to match their cheeky grins;
They were but boys:

We “old sweats” average age twenty six,
Pulled their legs and played some army tricks;
They took it all within their stride,
Installed in each a soldiers;
They were but boys:

Rough edges smoothed and fit to fight,
Each one knew the cause was right;
Their test to come and ours too,
Was for the many not the few;
They were but boys:

In Burma they proved their worth,
Fighting for their land of birth;
But God looked down one awesome day,
And took each one of them away;
They were but boys:

We buried them there by the side of the track,
Just three of the many who didn’t come back;
Why God took them I never knew,
Young Tom, young Dick, young Harry too;
They were but boys:

We “Old seats”, average age seventy six,
Remember the boys, remember the tricks;
And as oft we stroll down Memory Lane,
We keep on hoping they died not in vain;
They were but boys:

Men Of England

Here is a poem of men and their story
Who fought in the jungle of blood and glory
They think of old england who thinks of them not
They go by the name MEN ENGLAND FORGOT.
-----------------
They live in the Jungle with rain all the day
They’ve all left behind good homes and good pay
But why should they worry who’s next to get shot
They’re only the army that ENGLAND FORGOT.
-----------------
Their officers told them the same sorry tale
When they asked for their parcels, papers and mail
You are unlucky it’s part of the plot
You’re only the army that ENGLAND FORGOT.
-----------------
The days turn to months the months turn to years
They live in holes with heart breaks and tears
Those that fought with them could tell you a lot
So god bless and keep you MEN ENGLAND FORGOT.
-----------------
The Jungle is quite the fighting is done
A grave marks the spot of the fighting we done
He gave his all, all that he’d got
He’s one of the men that ENGLAND FORGOT.
-----------------
But now the war’s over the fighting is done
We chased the japs and made them run
So let us thank god boys that it was our lot
To come out alive forgotten or not.
-----------------
