When the Japanese Generals
Surrendered
.....The
1st Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment provided guard of honour
at the last ceremony of the Burmese campaign-the handing over of swords
in token of personal surrender by the Japanese generals. This imposing
ceremony took place on the spacious lawns outside 12th Army headquarters,
and the Twelfth Army commander, Lt.-General Sir Montagu Stopford, and members
of his staff received the swords of their Japanese equivalents.
.....Among members of the guard of honour were
L/Cpl. Frank E. Barber, 29, St. Alphege-road, Lower Edmonton and L/Cpl. Norman
Champ, 63, Farrant-avenue, Wood Green.

NORMAN CHAMP, of 63, Farrant-avenue, Wood Green, was one of 24 men who
provided the guard of honour at the last ceremony of the Burma campaign-the
handing over of swords by the Japanese generals as a sign of personal surrender.
.....The ceremony took place on the spacious
lawns outside 12th Army H.Q. The Army Commander Lieut.-General Sir Montagu
Stopford, and members of his staff received the swords of their Japanese
equivalents.
.....The 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment served
with distinction throughout the bitter fighting in Arakan, Kohima, and Imphal,
and was the spearhead of the drive on Mandalay and Rangoon.
