Joined A Bloody Shower
Extracts from a recorded interview with
L/Cpl. William Joseph Lowe 14640525
.....Well we were
transferred from the Warwicks to the Berks (Royal Berkshires), we didn’t
like being transferred, on the first weekend they give you a letter which is
sent by airmail so you could write home. Anyway I wrote to the wife, bloody
hell I said, I’ve been transferred to a right shower. I wrote it just
like that, well on a Sunday morning the Sergeant had us all out, he had nine
of us out in a row, Wells was one of us. Core he tore a strip of us, “joined
a bloody shower have ya”. He said right he said, “I’ll give
you shower”, and from that day on I couldn’t do anything right
for him.
.....Then I’d been in about five weeks and the company runner come up
to me and said, ‘Lowe, Sergeant Major wants to see you, he said, what
the bloody hell have you done this time?’ The Sergeant Major said ‘sit
down’; well I mean they never ask you to sit down, so I sat down, and
he said, ‘would you like to go on leave?’ Just like that, so I
said, I’ve only been here five weeks Sir. Well he said ‘you’re
the only one in credit’. So he said ‘if you want to go you can
go’.
