Short For A Patrol
Extracts from a recorded interview with
L/Cpl. William Joseph Lowe 14640525
.....You
finished the day’s patrols and anything else you had to do. Then this
type of thing would happen, you would get an Officer/s like XXXX he would
tell the Sergeant Major that he would need men for a patrol, and add, I want
two men or three men, or something like that and the Sergeant Major would say,
take Lowe and XXXX, it was always Lowe, XXXX and XXXX.
.....We were supposed to have had 120 men in a Company, well we were down to
20 to 24 men on many occasions due to casualties and sickness because some
of the men hadn’t took their pills. Because a lot of men wouldn’t
take the mepacrin and they caught Malaria, but I’ve heard since that
most of those who never took the mepacrin suffered a lot more when they got
home because Malaria would return every two or three months.
